Tips for Photos With Children - From a Mother & Portrait Photographer
We recently had our own family photos taken and as I was getting everything together, I realized the task would be so much easier if I had an actual checklist. To try to help simplify things for you, I have compiled a list of tips for you to use as your prep for your session. I’ve also provided a checklist for you to use while packing your bags! I am a tangible person and I love to be able to actually check things off of a list. (You should see the sticky notes on my desk!) Feel free to print this list if you are like me and would like to physically check things off the list. I use a Large L.L.Bean Boat and Tote and I set it in our entryway so I can place things inside as I go down my check list and gather them. Then it’s already by the door, ready for me to grab on our way out!

There are so many factors that can effect how children react at a photo session. Here are some tips from my experience as a Mother and Portrait Photographer to help you have a smooth and enjoyable experience during your next session.
A few weeks before your session, choose a color palette and start shopping around for your family’s outfits! Blog post on this, coming soon! See my “What to Wear” Instagram Highlight bubble!
Morning of your session - have all outfits set out and ready (ironed, steamed, etc) before everyone needs to get dressed. Include everyone’s shoes with their outfits! This will eliminate the stress of finding shoes while trying to run out the door!
If the time of your session interrupts your child’s normal nap time, plan to start their nap a little earlier that day. An early nap is better than no nap at all! A well rested babe makes all the difference!
Nothing is worse than feeling late and chaotic right before putting on a smile for photos. Arrive to the session location 10 minutes early to give yourself peace of mind and make minor adjustments to hair, makeup, and outfits. This will also allow your children to become aware of their surroundings before you are thrown into taking photos!
Dress your children when you arrive to the shoot location. I keep my children in their pajamas all day, and drive them to our session location still in their pajamas. Once we get to where we are going, I dress them in their outfits, shoes, and bow/accessories.
Don’t stress. Easier said than done, I know. Your kids will feed off of your energy. If you are mad/annoyed/etc, your children will pick up on it and things can escalate quickly. If you are calm, happy, excited, they will also show those feelings. If you are prepared and on time, you will go into the session feeling at peace.
Let kids be kids! Photos of your children being themselves, are always the best! My favorite photos are always those that capture their little personalities. Once you get a few shots of the whole family and smaller groupings, allow time for photos of your children playing and all of you interacting as a family.
Don’t go in with any set expectations. Have an open mind. As a young family, it is likely that your session may turn into more of a “lifestyle” type of family session. You will treasure the photos either way!
My last tip - treat yourself to a meal out after while you are already dressed up! Enjoy your time as a family!
I hope this helps you prepare for your next session! If you would like to book a family session with me, or would like more information, please inquire here or send me an email at kayley@kayleyjohanssonphoto.com! I would love to work with you!
